Mission Bay Park is a Cash Cow for the City of San Diego

Mission Bay Park is a beloved part of the San Diego community. With over 4,500 acres of parkland, navigable waterways, and wetlands, not only does Mission Bay support our families, visitors, and recreational users, but it generates a huge amount of revenue for the City of San Diego’s General Fund.
Most years, $20 million dollars of leasehold revenue, generated by SeaWorld, hotels, and other vendors operating in the park, goes directly to the General Fund. Leasehold revenue over this threshold is spent on Capital Improvement Projects in Mission Bay Park and other City of San Diego Regional Parks like Balboa Park and Mission Trails Park.
How does Prop 45 threaten Mission Bay?
Rose Creek is the largest source of freshwater inflows into Mission Bay. What happens in Rose Creek ends up in Mission Bay and your kids swim in it.
Portions of Rose Creek along the I-5 corridor could be fast tracked for harmful projects such as data centers or other polluting industries without performing a full environmental review of potential negative impacts to Rose Creek and Mission Bay. Pollution entering Rose Creek will end up in Mission Bay. Prop 45’s expedited review process means potential negative impacts would not be addressed. The fast tracking process would eliminate public participation in project planning. Plus, projects could be exempt from paying to mitigate for water quality degradation in Rose Creek and Mission Bay Park.
What’s at Stake?
Water contact activities in Mission Bay could be threatened by pollution. Tourism could potentially drop. If the number of visitors to the park drops, leasehold revenues would shrink and negatively impact an already broke city. For a city that relies so heavily on coastal recreation and tourism dollars, polluting Mission Bay is not only an environmental disaster, but a financial one as well.
