Spanish era map of San Diego

This amazing project identifies the Kumeyaay names of Kumeyaay cultural spaces and natural resources in the Kumeyaay language. It also provides archaeological information where available and other interesting details.

The research presented here was made possible by grants from the Sycuan Institute on Tribal Gaming and the UC Office of the President’s Critical Mission Studies project MRP-19-598854. Based on the places of origin for Kumeyaay people whose baptisms were recorded in the San Diego mission records between 1775 and 1840, the Kumeyaay names for many of these places were linguistically reconstructed and translated when possible. Additional historical and archaeological research also helped us to identify the meanings of some of these places.

Explore and learn from the Kumeyaay Placenames story map.
