Bird Watching and Nature Walk

January 6, 2019 - 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM

Pacific Beach

Join the Friends of Rose Creek on a bird watching and nature walk that is wheelchair accessible.  We’ll be sticking to the paved paths in the area although there are some slopes as we go under Grand and/or Garnet Avenue. 1/2 to 3/4 mile walk. Family friendly! Bring your kids, bring your elders, bring your binoculars!

We’ll meet some of the year round residents of Rose Creek like the Belted Kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon), Snowy Egret (Egretta thula), and Osprey (Pandion
haliaetus) and keep our eyes pealed for our winter visitors: Red-Breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator), American Wigeon, (Anas americana), and Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus).

We’ll talk about the history of the area, visit the Rose Creek Salt Marsh and Estuary and spend some time along the fresh water riparian habitat. You’ll learn about native and invasive plants, impacts from urbanization, and a bit about the history of the Kumeyaay in this area.

We’ll meet at the faculty (east and smaller) parking lot of Mission Bay High School, which has an entrance on Grand Avenue and overlooks Rose Creek. Plenty of free parking, or take the # 30 bus and exit at Bond Street just east of the parking lot. The closest restroom is at the sports fields just east of Rose Creek & Grand Avenue.
