Training to Support Wetlands at Mouth of Rose Creek

October 8, 2020 - 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM

ReWild Mission Bay LogoThe Friends of Rose Creek is part of the ReWild Mission Bay Coalition — a project of San Diego Audubon and our coalition partners to enhance and restore natural wetlands in the northeast corner of Mission Bay including at the mouth of Rose Creek for cleaner water, climate resiliency, carbon sequestration, and greater access to public space.

Our intent is to provide new opportunities for native plants and wildlife to thrive, and for all San Diegans to more fully enjoy nature and the natural habitats of our collective backyard. Mission Bay Park is an extraordinary public resource for everyone, including neighbors, regional residents, international visitors, and environmentally underserved communities throughout our region.

The City of San Diego has an opportunity to avoid paying part of a fine for a sewage spill that impacted Mission Bay by including a full study of ReWild’s Wildest Alternative in an Environmental Impact Report.  This is where you come in. We need you to learn the talking points so you help us make the case.

The city’s Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) that we’ve been telling you about this summer goes before the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) for approval at their upcoming meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

We need your help to ensure the board approves the SEP proposal.

Approval of the SEP will enable the Wildest plan for wetland restoration that we have been advocating for over the last two years to be considered at the same level of attention as the city’s own plan (i.e., the “preferred alternative”). That’s a big deal for our effort.

To get our coalition up to speed for the Regional Water Quality Control Board meeting on the 14th, ReWild Mission Bay will host a brief, hour long informational presentation via Zoom this Thursday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on what the SEP proposal is, and how approval of it will move our Wildest plan closer to becoming a reality in the ecological revitalization of northeast Mission Bay.
